we are ernest

Dérivelab continues as an ongoing research project, however our main activities as a collective are now being conducted under the name Ernest. Our first event under this name, ironically, will be a talk and walk in many ways engaging with similar themes surrounding the theory and practice of dérive. The event is entitled Performing Gravity and takes place on 24th Sept. 2011 at Eb&Flow gallery, Leonard Street, London.

What is DériveLab?

Dérivelab is a varied collective of artists and other practitioners formed around a core group of Goldsmiths graduates that works with other numerous invited collaborators, both internationally established and recent graduates. We work critically, assessing what continuing relevance can be drawn out from the intellectual territory surrounding the dérive and psychogeography, site, intervention, relational space, cartography and mapping practices.

DériveLab is a fluid conceptual framework that operates as a site for experimentation and exploration, taking the idea of the Dérive - drift – as a critical methodology. Both the academic and practice backgrounds of the members in the collective offer a wide spectrum of approaches to the projects and exhibitions that we are involved with. Our personal backgrounds are cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary, encompassing practitioners from the UK, Italy, Romania and Japan.

DériveLab therefore forms a collaborative arena in which creative or inquisitive international practitioners; from artists, designers and performers to researchers, educators, geographers and musicians come together to investigatively dismantle and creatively reconstruct the unconscious of place.
